How fun to give the gift of art. Something she will have for many years (hopefully) and cherish.
This is the beginning stages of a commission I completed recently for a baby girl affectionately nicknamed Winks...
The family member giving the gift wanted to use frogs images from a vintage storybook that she had read as a child. When I start a piece of artwork, my system is usually to get the sketch going and then placement of collage. Then it's off to add the color, my favorite part.
The pic above is layered with a wash of paint first and then filled in with lots of crayons, oil pastel, graphite, anything I can get my hands on. I then complete the piece with collage, more detail, and finally beeswax...
Here is the finished piece above without beeswax and the one below completed with a layer of wax. Unless you click on each image for a detail, you can't really see how the beeswax really highlights all the underlying color and texture built into the piece. Even then it is hard to see...
Anyway, it turned out fun and I hope the birthday girl enjoys it for many years to come!

it is simply darling!!! I hope she treasures it!
but, make I ask, how do you keep the beeswax from getting scratched up? Or is this highly "handle with care"?
What a beautiful gift-how lucky she is! Loved watching your process-if you ever do a workshop in the Midwest let me know! Carol in Chicago
so lovely, lisa!
Thank you for sharing your process. I love to watch how other artists work.
And this beeswax idea is intriguing. I have never really been able to try it. Maybe I should read up a little.
How adorable!

A very sweet painting for a very lucky little girl. Thanks so much for sharing the stepped-out photos, Lisa. It's always interesting to see how other artists create. Your work is amazing!! ~Joann
What a cool gift! I loved seeing your collage process. I've only worked with wax over collage a couple times and I'm amazed what it does to the layers underneath. Thanks for sharing!
That is just fabulous!! I love it that you have your crayons/pens on a silver tray!! I also wish you'd do a workshop in the Chicago/Milwaukee area! Everything you make is delightful and so much fun to look at! Keep up the good work!
I love it! Winks is a lucky girl:)

Did the book the frogs came from happen to be "A fly went by"??? The frogs look so familiar, and when I was a little girl "A fly went by" was my favorite book. Thank you for showing your work process, what fun it was to see.

I love the way you combine the layers of paints, papers, epherma and beeswax into one-of-a-kind pieces of art. But your work always has your signature mark on them; you can tell they are made by Lisa Kaus. You are truly an inspiring artist.
How could the birthday girl not appreciate this darling piece! Love the froggies. Your work is so very whimsical and fun, Lisa. Looking forward to seeing what you create with your new passion of antique door knobs.
